How to Decrease Toxicity and Harmful Chemical Exposures in your Environment and Body

8/3/2018

Certain chemicals applied to your skin or in the air can be absorbed by your body and may cause harm to your cells and organ systems. They can cause inflammation and increase the body’s production of free radicals, thus increasing your likelihood of developing chronic health problems.
Food
  • Shift your food purchases and consumption to organic when possible. It is most important to use organic dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc.). Free-range meats and eggs are desirable to purchase as organic. Minimize the use of large fish (swordfish, tuna, etc.) as they are higher in mercury.
  • Purchase organic strawberries and apple, and refer to the Environmental Working Group or Consumer Reports websites to stay current about which fruits and veggies are most important to eat organic.
Products
  • Purchase the most natural cleaning and other household products you can find.
  • Avoid spraying pesticides or herbicides in your home or your property.
  • For hair products (including shampoo and colors) look for products without alcohol, sodium lauryl sulfate, paraben, phthalate or other petrochemicals. Check your local yellow pages and magazines to see if there is an environmentally oriented hair salon in your area.
  • Avoid using hair sprays.
  • Avoid perfumes or other skin or hair care products that use synthetic fragrances.
Skin Care and Makeup
  • Use low-toxin makeup and skin creams (avoid products with: phthalates, parabens, propylene glycol, alcohols and fragrances). In general, skin care products from health food stores without the above ingredients are a safer bet.
  • Consider using antioxidant creams on your skin: low solvent products with CoQ10, Vitamin C possibly DMAE and botanical squalene
Antiperspirants and Deodorant
  • Avoid aluminum-containing antiperspirants and antacids. Since virtually all antiperspirants contain aluminum, it may be advisable to minimize or discontinue use.
Water
  • Water can have many toxins and thus regular consumption of unfiltered water can significantly contribute to the toxic load of your body.
  • Water quality will vary from city to city but in general it is better to filter tap water with a multi-stage carbon filter or reverse osmosis filter.
  • Try to avoid bottled water all together, as the plastics often leach into the water. Minimize the use of plastic water bottles that have been in a hot car.  Tap water is better than water in plastic bottles.
  • Minimize the use of camel-back type plastic water containers. Use glass, ceramic or stainless steel when possible.
  • Mineral waters in glass bottles are generally safe unless there is a question of the quality of the source.
  • Filter shower water in order to limit your exposure to chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Plastics
  • Plastics can disrupt hormones in your body.
  • Avoid plastic bottles and containers with the numbers 3, 6 and 7 on the bottom. These are most likely to leach plastics into the food, juice or water that they contain.
  • Buy juices and water in glass containers when possible.
  • Avoid PVCs.
  • Do not microwave in plastic containers.
  • Minimize washing plastic containers in the dishwasher under high heat.
  • Minimize the use of cling wraps; try to use paper wraps.
Dental Care
  • Avoid mercury amalgam fillings.
  • Get second opinions on root canals.
  • Avoid if possible having two different metals in adjacent teeth.
  • Pick a dentist who is aware of healthy choices for the mouth—perhaps a more holistic or biologically oriented dentist who does not place new mercury fillings.
Home
  • Use only green and low-VOC products in a remodel or a new home.
  • Avoid furniture with particle board or buy used furniture that has had a chance to “off gas.”
  • Let a new car off gas by keeping the windows open.
  • Use an air filter such as a HEPA filter with a charcoal filter to clean the debris in the air.
  • Minimize the amount of regular carpet in your home, or use natural carpets.
  • Avoid using pesticides in your house.
Home or Office Remodel
  • Use a low- or no-VOC paint and carpet or rug.
  • Minimize carpet and choose hardwoods but not laminates (avoid Pergo, for example).
  • Take off shoes at the door to decrease indoor chemicals and pesticides.
  • Avoid urea formaldehyde in building products.
  • Change the filter on your furnace every 3 months, using the best allergy furnace filter you can find.

Electromagnetic Fields
For patients with headaches or regional pain, decrease exposure to low-level electromagnetic fields:
  • Minimize cell phone use.
  • Minimize your use of portable phones at home and shift to corded phones.
  • Take the clock radio away from the head of your bed.
  • Get the fields measured in a potential new car before you buy it.
This is a lot of information that can be very overwhelming. Just pick one or two changes at a time to incorporate into your lifestyle. To help you out with a first step, I am including my very simple and basic recipe for an all-purpose cleaner I have been using in my house for years.

Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner

Ingredients:
16 ounce amber glass spray bottle (I ordered mine form Amazon)
8 ounces of distilled and/or filtered water
5 ounces of white vinegar
1-2 tablespoons of Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap (found in any health food store and many conventional grocery stores)
20-30 drops of Lemon Essential Oil (I like to purchase my essential oils from Mountain Rose Herbs) or Thieves Oil by Young Living

Now what:
- Pour all of the ingredients into the glass amber spray bottle and shake.
- Full Disclosure: I usually don't measure the ingredients so these are all estimations. You can experiment with your amounts. For example, try a bit more vinegar or essential oil, or even try adding some other essential oil singles or blends.

Bottled Water: The good, the bad and the ugly

Drinking bottled water is so convenient: it is easy to grab and go, it can be found just about everywhere, it can be a way to keep track of how much you drink each day, and it tastes clean and delicious. With so many great reasons to reach for that bottle, it is easy to forget the serious reasons to actually stay away from it. Not only does bottled water have serious environmental implications, it can also have a negative impact on your health.

Six reasons to avoid buying and drinking bottled water:

1. Buying bottled water is expensive! Really expensive! On average, tap water costs about 0.0015 per gallon. Breaking down the cost of a water filter, the price increases to about .31 per gallon. Bottled water ranges in price from .89-8.26 per gallon. The price difference is relative to the amount of water being purchased. When comparing these prices to tap water, bottled water is a huge market. Annually, American’s spend 61 billion dollars on bottled water, which equals 8.6 billion gallons of water per year.

2. It comes in the lowest quality plastic bottles. More and more people are becoming aware of the toxins in plastic. So much so, that most food containers are now being made BPA free, yet people don’t seem to make the connection to plastic water bottles.  Aside from the aforementioned BPA, there are approximately 24,000 other dangerous chemicals in plastic that should be avoided.  Companies that bottle water want to spend their money on bottling water, advertising, and paychecks. They don’t want to “waste” money on improving the quality of the plastic used to make the bottles. Unfortunately, time and temperature play a role in how much of these chemicals leech into the actual water. There is no telling how long bottled water sits in hot storage areas and delivery trucks. Even just leaving a bottle of water in a hot car for a few hours can lead to high amounts of endocrine disrupting chemicals in each sip. (More on endocrine disruptors later.)  In general, glass and stainless steel are always better options.

3. Lower quality than tap water.
Forty percent of bottled water comes from municipal water sources. In other words, it is tap water. With that being said, tap water is closely monitored for quality within each municipality that pulls from that water source. Bottled water, which is owned by private companies, is tested for quality privately and at much lower standards. Even more unreliable, bottled water companies are not required to release their findings. Independent researchers have looked into what is in bottled water. 38 different contaminants were consistently found, such as bacteria, cancer causing agents, fertilizer, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, caffeine, heavy metals, and radioactive isotopes. These chemicals are also found in the low quality plastics used for the bottles, and are known endocrine disruptors. The endocrine system is responsible for many hormones and chemicals that help different parts of the body communicate. When these hormones are out of balance or blocked, which can happen when endocrine disruptors enter the body, myriad health issues can ensue, including fertility issues, reproductive system diseases, different types of cancer, as well as pregnancy complications.

4. Bottling water uses a ton of resources.
It takes 17 million barrels of oil per year just to make the plastic bottles. Bottling 20 ounces uses 60 ounces of water. After the plastic bottles have been made and filled, they have to be shipped all over the country, as well as internationally. This uses even more oil and resources.

5. Creates more waste.  Only 1 in 5 plastic bottles are actually recycled. Most end up in the landfills, where it takes 10,000 years to be broken down. The bottles that are recycled use additional resources for the recycling process and create lower quality plastic out of already low quality material. Cardboard and aluminum have the most success in the recycling process but when dealing with plastic, reducing is superior to recycling.

6. Bottling water takes water from others.
Privately owned water bottling companies don’t have to share where their water actually comes from. They make consumers think water is coming from natural springs and aquifers that aren’t needed by those who live in the area. There are a number of companies that bottle water found in California, which has been in a major drought for years. Large companies, such as Nestle, mine water from small towns. There is nothing different about this water than what comes out of the taps of those who live in that area.

How to avoid buying bottled water:
  1. Invest in a good quality water filter and reusable water bottles.
  2. Plan ahead so you don’t find yourself out for the day without any water.
  3. Reinforce your bottled water knowledge by watching “Tapped”.
